Week One…. Really?

So apparently the official start to my 20 week training plan snuck up on me. Voila it starts tomorrow! Good thing I was sitting at my desk and had the thought to check. Well I guess that takes the mystery out of my workout plans for the week (oh and the next 19 too)!

The good news is that the first 4 weeks are the “prep” phase. I think I’ve done a pretty good job in February of holding myself accountable to getting workouts in. In fact, the calendar was packed! I figured now that February is over, I will share a glimpse into my workout calendar of everything I completed (proud moment).

February Garmin Data Recap

So now I’m on to March. The first week of March was a bit weak given a really hectic work schedule, but I still managed to get a few good workouts in. Now looking back, I may have done things a tad different if I knew it was my last independent week for AWHILE, but it is what it is. Here’s what the week looked like:

One thing is for sure with going to the plan, I will definitely be doing much more swimming and biking. It will be good to force myself. I’ve gotten a few good sessions in since the start of 2013, but nowhere close to where I need to be. In fact today, I even made my return to my road bike outside for the first time since September. It was still too cold and windy but I got 30 minutes in. Felt good to know I could still get on the bike and go (and thankfully no incidents with clipping in!)

Road Ride 1 of 2013!

This past Monday I had the opportunity to try out a cycle place in Bethesda Maryland called Zengo Cycle. My sister recommended it from a member at her club. I had went to the website to learn that the first class was free, but $22 per class after. Wow! I knew if this place could get away with charging that, it had to be good. I figured I might as well use the free class and check it out. WOW! What a workout! Class was about 60 minutes of steady non-stop riding with a cool down and stretch at the end. I was dripping sweat by the time I got out. The instructor did an amazing job of keeping the class engaged and motivated. The time flew by like nothing. We did a ton of pushups on the bike as we cycled, but the most unique thing we did was using weights on the bike. Yes, you read that right…weights while cycling. While the weights are maybe 2 lbs a piece, they get your arms BURNING! It was tough but burned so good. I walked out of the class feeling very accomplished. So much so that I would go back in a heart beat and invest the money in another class. Big kudos to the studio! Their website is: http://www.zengocycle.com

So yesterday marked seven years since the night I first truly met Jason and our journey together started. We spent a great day together, nothing specific, but just another Saturday together full of smiles. We ended up on a random little journey (I will spare you the details) but it led to a great discussion about the Ironman. I shared how I’m beyond nervous yet super excited. He had some really encouraging things to say, and quite frankly they were exactly what I needed to hear. He reminded me of how Tara from the Biggest Loser finished an Ironman, and all of the people that you watch struggle to finish each year on TV at Kona, and how they all get to that finish line, one way or another. He reminded me that I coach others of the same principles that I need to follow: Concentrate on your training. Have faith in your training. Focus on one step at a time. Fuel early and often. But then one thing he said really got my heart and made me tear up. He said we will all be out there you Jackie. Me, your parents, your friends, cheering for you every step of the way….because we know you can do it. (Tearing up just writing this!) That got me motivated and in a positive mindset. I can do this. I will do this. My official journey starts tomorrow!

The End of February

Wow! Where did February go? I can’t believe it! Lot’s of great athletic endeavors this month as I prepare for the start of official IMLP (Ironman Lake Placid) training towards mid-March.

So obviously it’s been a couple of weeks since my last post so let me bring you up to speed on a few of the highlights. My work travel continues to be in Greenville South Carolina. Although being away from home can be challenging for maintaining time to workout, it’s been pretty easy here. To start with I’ve been taking an AMAZING spin class at a local gym – Pivotal Fitness. The woman who teaches the 5:30 am class ROCKS MY WORLD. She’s a great motivator and a great pusher. The hour is BRUTAL but the feeling of accomplishment upon departure makes every pedal stroke worth it. I’ve also experimented with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class on Wednesday am. The instructor definitely forces me out of my comfort zone. The weights tho kick my bootay (and I need it). In addition to the gym here, I’ve also found a great trail that starts near the Greenville Zoo and heads out towards the Fall along the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The trail is great with lots of scenery and a lot of other runners and cyclists. It’s great to see so many other active people out.

I believe I left off my last post talking about the upcoming Superbowl 10K in the Lehigh Valley. What a great time I had despite the frigid temperatures and snow covered roads. Every year they give custom race socks to the top 50 male and female finishers. I’ve never been in the top 50 but I was absolutely determined this year. I pushed HARD and it paid off. I got to the finish and there was still at least 15 other pairs in the box to be given out. Go me! Yay! I then indulged and started my day of Superbowl Style Mass Eating. Umm, I earned it, right?

Valentine’s Day took me on a little adventure to the Sand Casino in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. I had a great night with my Valentine starting with dinner at Emeril’s Chophouse. We then headed over to the Event Center to see Scotty McCreery. It was a great venue to see a band. In addition a little bonus was the opener was Sarah Darling. I didn’t realize she was the same artist that played live a few weeks ago on the Bachelor (guilty pleasure). The next morning Jas wanted to gamble so I took advantage of the time to head out for a run. I had no idea where I was going but just headed out and followed where the road took me. I ended up on a trail that took me near the Steel Stacks. Such a cool historical view. I ended up eventually in downtown Bethlehem and then knew exactly where I was. It was such a great adventure! I ended up just going with it and had an amazing eight mile adventure.

That same weekend I kicked off the next season of coaching Team in Training. I have a few great participants this season that are such a great mix of individuals, all with different stories. They are all so inspiring to me for taking on this challenge in addition to balancing everything else in their lives. My one participant definitely inspires me to get more involved with cross fit/cross training. I love it! I also made a really tough decision this month with respect to my upcoming commitments. After weeks of deep thought and reflection I decided to take a step back from coaching Team in Training next season. Not an easy decision, but none the less I needed to prioritize. I have a lot going on this summer with IMLP and work. I decided I would rather focus on doing a couple of things well rather than not being able to give my best to many things. Again, not an easy call and hearing the words come out of my mouth was heart breaking, but none the less it needed to happen. Team in Training will always hold a special place in my heart.

Last Thursday was the third Thursday of the month which meant Run Around Scranton! Run Around Scranton is such a great way to bring the community together toa different establishment to promote a healthy lifestyle. There was at least 150 people there for the two mile run which started and ended at Zaleski’s. Aside from arriving late and now knowing I could register to actually get a time, I had an awesome time! I ran most of the first mile with Jas before my competitive juices got the best of me and I was off to chase after other pony tails. Hey, at least I can admit it right?

This past weekend I headed to da ‘Cuse. My plan was to coach the TEAM Saturday am then hop in the car to drive to Syracuse. I was meeting a friend to go to the Georgetown/Syracuse Bball game. I was also blessed to have my parents drive to Syracuse and meet us for lunch at Dinosaur BBQ (def fell off the eating well boat). It was so great to see them! I had an awesome time with them as well as at the game.

While scrolling Facebook on Saturday afternoon I came across mention of the Lake Effect Half Marathon which happened to be the next day, Sunday. I posted to their page asking if there would be any race day registration slots open. I got back a response that there were three left and they were first come first served. Well, to make a long story short, I was able to get one! I figured why not?! It was the furthest I’ve run this far in 2013. I ran it much faster than what I expected. I was thrilled with my time given my level of training as well as the brutally cold weather conditions. Perhaps one of the highlights was the bling! I LOVE my medal and was so excited to get home and add it to my collection.

Seeing as last week was one of the highest mileage weeks I’ve had in a while, I took today off to recover. I know how critical recovery is but sometimes it is so hard to just relax. Crazy, I know (my Mom reminds me everyday, she will never “get it”). So tonight has been full of take out, chilling, watching the Bachelor. I love that I’m able to finally post as this was so overdue. Help me be accountable for more frequent posts 🙂 Sweet Dreams! XOXO

On the Road….Again

I owe my follower community an apology for being MIA for a few days. I realize that I was much better at frequent posts when I was not working. Go figure. So back at it! I’m blogging from my hotel room in Greenville, South Carolina as I’m here for a new audit. Good news is it’s a new location for me. Bad news is umm well, let’s stick to the good 🙂 So let me bring you up to speed!

Tuesday 1/8/13

  • WOD (Workout of Day): Well I am now a member of the Y and my big return to the pool! I swam for 30 minutes consecutively in the pool and surprisingly felt great! My arms were a bit sore, to be expected, but I was more than satisfied with my performance.
  • Other Noteworthy Items: Worked from home during the day to get some random tasks wrapped up so I could focus on my PMP exam planned for Friday. After my trip to the Y with my swim partner in crime, we went to grab some sushi from a local establishment. http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx

Wednesday 1/9/13

  • WOD:  After work (from home) I headed to Wilkes Barre to get a 6 mile run in outside as the sun went down. It was gorgeous and so therapeutic. I then met Jason at Planet Fitness and spent 45 minutes on the Arc Trainer next to him. I wrapped up with some ab work. I’m trying to get as much ab work as I can these days. I surely need it!

  • Other Noteworthy Items: Kind of an uneventful day! Work. Workout. Dinner at Panera.

Thursday 1/10/13

  • WOD: I worked out my mind instead, PMP style 😉
  • Other Noteworthy Items: I pretty much spent the day stressing, studying, stressing, and stressing over taking the PMP the next day. Why did I want to get this certification anyways? I found any way I could to distract myself. Then once I focused, I entered freak out mode. I finally decided “it is what it is” and prayed for formula and process osmosis to my brain overnight.

Friday 1/11/13

  • WOD: Negative! Opted to celebrate with coworkers after work over a few selective beverages. Cheers!
  • Other Noteworthy Items: Took my PMP exam that I was cramming for and PASSED! Yay! I will say that it was waaaaaaay too much stress for a Friday but seeing the Pass come up on the screen once I completed the exam made it all seem worth it. It was not an easy test by any means. I will count this one a big success for 2013 to get the year going right 🙂
Officially a PMP aka PiMP ;)

Saturday 1/12/13

  • WOD: 6 mile run around Mountain Top, most of it with Jason. Was an unseasonably warm day (50’s) and needed to take advantage! Felt awesome!
  • Other Noteworthy Items: Spent much of the day relaxing and then topped it off with an awesome couples date night at the Tipsy Turtle with some great friends. Had a great time and many laughs. Super therapeutic!

Sunday 1/13/13

  • WOD: Just wasn’t feeling it. Was so wrapped up in stuff that I never made time 😦
  • Other Noteworthy Items: Spent most of the day catching up on stuff before hitting the road. Woke up and started making some awesome XXX recipes. One was from a friend and the other was a random I found by Giada (love her). The XXX was part of my package to my foodie penpal. Once the XXX was done I spent a ton of time putting together the rest of my package to send. Others think I am crazy for doing this, but I am SO excited! I shared my blog link with the gal that is my foodie penpal this month, so I can’t tell you, or show you what’s in the package. However, I will bring you up to speed at the end of the month and also show you what my foodie penpal got me! Interested in learning more about the foodie penpal program? Check it out: http://www.theleangreenbean.com/foodie-penpals/  Once I was done with my package, I watched the playoff football games and made some grub. I’m addicted to crockpot recipes! I also spent a couple hours working on a Pinterest project I had pinned a few weeks for DIY Photo Canvases. I had my pics printed at Sam’s club and they turned out awesome! Ck out the DIY instructions at: http://www.literallyinspired.com/2012/02/picture-perfect.html I did 3 – 16X20’s and 4 – 8X10’s for a layout that I also saw on Pinterest and loved. I’m super excited to get these hung up in the living room. The colors are so bright and full of energy. Bonus: Each pic reminds me of some great memories! It was then time to pack, something I def didn’t miss.

Monday 1/14/13

  • WOD: 3 miles on the hotel treadmill = boring and humid and smelly and gross. I couldn’t get out of their fast enough. So I decided to head back to my room and try a workout I pinned on Pinterest the day before: “The Drop 10 Workout.” It consisted of 100 crunches (ouch), 90 jumping jacks, 80 lunges, 70 squats, 60 seconds running in place, 50 second plank (I was shaking), 40 jumping jacks, 30 squats, 20 high knees, and 10 push ups. I enjoyed that! Good change of pace.

A Little Variety, Courtesy of Pinterest!

  • Other Noteworthy Items: Made my big return to the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Airport at 5:30 am. I did NOT miss travel over vacation. I loved being home. However, it seems all good things must come to an end. Got to the airport to be informed they have changed their policy and now I need to be there ten minutes earlier to check a bag. I really need to get better at packing in a carry on. Carry on = 10 more minutes of sleep Monday mornings! Fortunately my flights were all on schedule and even met up with some of my team members during my layover. Good company always makes for better travel 🙂 Landed in Greenville and was greeted by a glowing AVIS counter agent. People here are soooooo happy, or as I refer to them, they s&*t rainbows 😉 Learned that there are little to no restaurant options near work so Subway won over fried fast food. Gross. Got to the site and the day fortunately flew by. Got back to the hotel, did my above workout and then grabbed some Chipotle action with the team. It was then time to settle into my guilty pleasure of watching the Bachelor.

Tuesday 1/15/13

  • WOD: Double session today! Dragged, and I mean dragged my butt out of bed to head out for an early am run around the hotel before work. Lots of rolling hills and not much scenery. Greenville doesn’t seem to believe in sidewalks, quite unfortunate. Got in 6 miles after getting slightly turned on around and had to refer to the phone to bail me out back to the hotel. After work I headed to Planet Fitness to get in 45 minutes on the arc trainer. Love.That.Machine! Got a few crunches in too before heading out.
  • Other Noteworthy Items: Another day back at the audit site conducting interviews. Good news is the clients I am working with are awesome and super cooperative. Makes life a lot easier. Bad news is another day of lunch at Subway. After heading to grab some quick sushi after Planet Fitness, I headed to Whole Foods to get some grub for lunch tomorrow in an attempt to avoid day three in a row of Subway. I could spend hours in Whole Foods. Love. Love. Love!

Well kiddos, time for some Private Practice in bed, if I can stay awake, then time for some Zzzzzzz’s.

The Restart

Well, it finally arrived. The dreaded return to work. And yes, it was just as awful as I had anticipated. I want to keep this blog positive so I will just say this… I believe life is too short to spend doing something you don’t love. I need to find a way to make my job consist of the things I love. I know it’s out there, I just need to take the leap and go after it.

Well it’s been a few days since I blogged so a few quick recaps:

Fri Jan 4th – Had my first local food truck experience at What the Fork. It was incredible! Delish! It was kind of like my last supper and I didn’t even realize it at the time. After leaving the truck I went to pick up my trays for the Invisalign treatment i’m undertaking (it’s currently undertaking me). I had no idea how bad my mouth would hurt instantly, and it still does as I type actually. I keep trying to focus on the positive and those perfect teeth I will finally have that I always wanted. I came home and headed out for a run around Mountain Top with Jason. 3.3 miles covered at a 9:03 pace.

Sat Jan 5th – Got my first foodie penpal e-mail to kick off the process! More to come on this one in the near future, but I can tell you I am super excited to try this! Got a bit of a late start getting going but headed over to Planet Fitness with Jason. I did 20 minutes on the Arc Trainer, 30 minute workout circuit (20 reps on each machine), and then spent another 20 minutes on the treadmill alternating speed walking and jogging. Not a bad effort. Came home got ready and headed out to Ipanema Grill in Scranton for a brazilian steakhouse experience for Jason’s brothers birthday with some friends. We had a great time! I overindulged a bit, but hey, it was the weekend 🙂

Sun Jan 6th – FORCED myself up at 8am to head down to meet the Team in Training crew at 9am for a run. First bad news was I forgot my friggin pedometer! Lots of steps wasted! Second, the dyke was covered in ice so we had to walk a bit to get out to the road (yes, more steps missed). But we finally made it out to the Ave (Wyoming Ave in Edwardsville) and headed out for our journey. I was open as to how many miles I wanted to go and figured I would see how I felt. I took the run at an easy pass and miles flew by with good company and good conversation. I started feeling my legs getting a bit sore around mile 7. I managed to push through to mile 9 before getting back to Kirby Park and being ready to call it a day. We averaged a 9:46 pace which I was pleased with since this was my longest run since the Dallas Marathon (December 9th). I spent most of the rest of the day watching the wildcard football games and enjoying my last official day of vacation.

Mon Jan 7th (aka today!) – After work I definitely needed to unwind so I headed to the Planet Fitness closest to work in Peckville. Spent 20 minutes on the Arc Trainer and then put in a solid 4 miles on the treadmill. I kept turning the speed up further and further as I went. I was flying by the end (and spent)! Came home to watch the second night of the Biggest Loser. LOVE the show and it motivates me so much. Jillian is such an inspiration to me. What I would do to get to train with her or even do what she does. Hmmm, back to my original comment about finding a job where my passion lies. And this post has officially now come around full circle. Nite Nite!

Hellllllllo 2013!

I officially welcomed in the new year in style! I spent NYE with Jason at a local restaurant which will remain anonymous (epic fail). We then came home and threw on some comfy’s to crawl into bed and watch the ball drop. I listened to all of the crazy people in Times Square that were there to pursue there bucket list item. At the same time I thought to myself that I had zero interest being crammed all day long in the cold waiting (while having to pee!). Just goes to show you the joy of bucket lists. They are not one size fits all. What makes one person’s list of dreams may be another person’s nightmare (I have a feeling my 140.6 dream is many people’s worst nightmare).

This morning I had my first fitness compromise of 2013. I really wanted to run a New Years 10K race in Scranton, but my significant other, not so much. So no race for me but we headed out for a little easy paced 5 mile  run around our neighborhood together. I felt great, minus the frigid temperatures. Averaged a 9:26 min/mile, not too shabby for my lack of effort.

Jas and I Ready to Conquer 5M in Mountain Top!

Made a great home cooked meal today in the crock-pot with some experimental items. We grabbed a pork loin from Weggies (good luck pork on New Years Day, or so they say) along with carrots, sweet potatoes, some left over brussels sprouts, all covered in a thai flavored stock. Delish! Such great flavor yet so lean! Not a bad start to the New Year 🙂

Before & After Crock-Pot Shots….Yum!

I also spent most of the day cleansing my house (indoors) of the holiday decor. Everything now looks so naked! Once I get a break I will decorate with some V-Day love to spice it up a bit.

So, what awaits me the rest of the evening? Well, I started my blog and my commitment to start training for IMLP, yet I have no plan. I am reminded by my old job as a planner where not planning is planning to fail. Time for some research! Hopefully I will soon be a woman with a plan 😉
